This article pretty much discusses Israel's first official statements about the situation in Egypt. Prime Minister Netanyahu says he is watching the events unfolding in Egypt with "vigilance and worry." He is also calling on the U.S. and Europe to curb their criticism of Hosni Mubarak in the interest of stability. It was just announced that Mubarak is stepping down at the end of his term and not seeking reelection. I wanted to get your opinions on the matter. Do you think it is appropriate or fair of Israel to ask the U.S. to get involved in the chaos that is going on in Egypt, by supporting Mubarak? Or should the U.S. stick to its ideals that it was founded on, and support the Egyptian people's revolution for reform and democracy? I also wanted to get your predictions about what will happen regarding international relations post-Mubarak in Palestine/Israel, Egypt, U.S., and the Middle East in general.

Israel should not ask the U.S. to get involved in the chaos that is going on in Egypt because "Israeli officials have remained largely silent about the situation." Israel claims to be a great ally of Egypt, yet they want the U.S. to intercede and say what they(Israel) believes. After Mubabrak stated that he will not seek reelection but at the same time will not currently step down, Obama said the "the transition must begin now."I think this statement shows what Obama is leaning towards without explicitly stating it. He also said, “we stand by to help with any assitance to the egyptian people.”
ReplyDeleteMy predictions for the future is that the barrier separating Gaza and Egypt could have a large influence on Israel. I think this is one of the main concerns of Israel because the wall is under Egypt's control.

ReplyDeleteI can see both points of view. However, I believe that there should be a smooth transition in the replacement of Mubabrak. As Obama stated, "orderly transition should begin NOW." The Egyptian people are fed up with living under Mubabrak's ruling and I do agree there needs to be a change and allow more freedom.
ReplyDeleteThough, not knowing who will come to power in Egypt and what his approach will be, leaves Israel in fear. For 30 years they have been in peace and it should stay this way. There is no need for soldiers to be put in the front line and war to begin.

I believe the U.S. should just watch for now. Sometimes this is the best course of action. It is as simple as that. There could and will be ramifications if the situation in Egypt goes awry but that bridge should be crossed when it gets here.

The United States needs to stay out of these countries, especially the ones rebelling. The United States needs to realize what is required of it and what is required of the UN.
