Palestinians are set to finally receive tax revenues that have been frozen for about two months. Palestian officals are in a desperate need for the funds to pay security services and public servants. The amount of money is to amount to about $100 million. Israel took action to freeze the account as a punishment for the Palestinian Authority attempt to gain recognition as a state. Many officials from the international community have pressured Israel to release the funds, including UN secretary-general and Hiliary Clinton.

To start off, I want to say that I am a very strong supporter of Israel, but sometimes actions like this one make it very difficult to justify the government's actions. I do want what is best for Israel, but I often think that their actions hoping to "send a message" usually end up making them look like the bad guys and ultimately make things harder for themselves.

ReplyDeleteThey do put themselves in postions where even their alliances have trouble defending them. The US and Israel have been allies for a long time, and Hilary Clinton was among those international officials who pressured Israel to release the funds.

The money released was necessary for Palestine. But, I must agree with the first comment that Israel takes the roll of a bad guy. Although, Israel does not intentionally want to be the bad country. The US, also, takes a counter argument. The US has always supported Israel but in certain situation it is good to know that representatives will recognize what is right.

While it is a shame that it took Israel so long to relinquish what shouldn't really have been theirs to begin with, it is truly great that it has actually happened at last.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with the aforementioned comment that Israel is the antagonist in this situation; however, it isn't necessarily intentional. Finally, the US has taken upon the counter-role and have also called for the release of these funds, which is also a relief because the US has been accustomed to taking Israel's side.

In a way i can understand that Israel felt the need to "punish" the Palestinian authority for their attempt to gain recognition as a state, however i do not think they effectively did so. Freezing money to palestine puts us in a situation where we feel we should get involved, and we simply do not need this. like previously mentioned, it is a relief that a call for these funds to be released has been put to work
