Israel and Iran Create World Tension

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-15617657

World War I was sparked by an event between two minor European powers who had the rest of Europe tied into the war through alliances. It is interesting to see a similar spark beginning to unfold between Israel and Iran. Israel has an unconditional ally, USA. Iran has two very strong allies, Russia and China. In this article Russia warns Israel that an attack on Iran would be a "very serious mistake fraught with unpredictable consequences", Russia's foreign minister has warned.

Israel wants to move in on Iran with a preemptive strike to prevent the development of Iran’s Nuclear program. Iran claims that it only wants to use nuclear power for commercial use. What will happen if Israel attacks Iran, and Russia steps in? World War III?

  1. I believe that issue is kind of flying under the radar right now. It kind of resembles World War 1 in a way because of the allies that suppor these smaller countries, but I believe that war is not that rationale as it was back then. Unless an Israel attack happens I don't think anything major happens. It's more likley that more sanctions are put on Iran from the UN at this moment in time. Will that do much nobody knows, but the more frustrated Israel gets with Iran the worse this issue becomes.

  2. Time is running out for Israel. They have to strike before the end of November because otherwise the weather in that region would turn against them (thick cloud covers). On the other hand we're just approaching a full moon this week. A new moon point of time would be more favourable with regards to usability of night vision equipment. The next new moon is on the 25th...they won't wait that long. My personal guess is that the strike will start this coming Sunday, after the Sabbath....oh the drama. Of course it will be a deadly mistake...we're pretty much done. The End.

  4. I don't think that Israel would do something as drastic and rash as attacking Iran. Even with the new evidence the UN has released regarding Iranian development of nuclear weapons, there is far from consensus on what should be done to address this issue among Western countries. Russia's warning against Israeli action displays the uncertainty surrounding this situation. It will be interesting to see how Israel reacts to this statement.

  5. I have to agree with Matt Russo, this would be a terrible mistake and Israel knows the negative implications that would occur from such an irrational attack. The article highlighted some resolutions to the problem which are basically communication and diplomacy. Two types of solutions Iran and Israel have yet to use. It would be in the best interest of the international community if Iran and Israel would simply make their intentions clear about their nuclear weapons and attempt to communicate with one another.

  6. I also agree. I think that it would be very unwise for Israel to launch a preemptive strike against Iran. They would possibly try to gain the support of the United States, and I do not think our country can handle another war. President Obama would also not want to get involved in another conflict before the election. Transparency would definitely be the most important way to prevent a major conflict, and hopefully avoid another World War.

  7. Okay, everyone seems to be leaning in the same direction. Well, I say a strike on Iran may not be that bad. Iran is one of the last minor powers in the region that stand against the US and Israel. While the ramifications of them using a nuke is pretty bad, it wouldn't happen but we can use it as an excuse to take away some of their military capabilities. As for Russia (and China), I'd say they are bluffing, they didn't even say what they'd do. This is a key tipping point in the balance of power in the middle-east. Opportunities like this come around every decade or so. Israel should take it, as a preventative strike.
