Former US President Jimmy Carter has accused the US and South Korea of human rights violations against North Koreans by withholding food aid.
Are the United States and South Korea really committing a human rights violation by not providing food aid to North Korea? What is the obligation of other countries when dealing with a nation as isolated and independent as North Korea?

There is no denying that the situation for the North Korean people is dyer, but I reject the fact that the US or any other country is responsible for human rights violations by not helping a country that threatens nuclear war to the same states they ask for help from.

It is difficult to say whether they are truly committing a human rights violation by nor providing food aid to North Korea. I believe that if it were any other country, this would without a doubt be a human rights violation. Yet as the student above pointed out, North Korea is in no position to demand help from the same state it constantly threatens. If they truly wanted to guarantee that its population will receive enough aid from other states, then they should consider changing their policies in international relations. At the same time, maybe the US and other countries providing aid should overlook the decisions from the North Korean leaders and focus of providing aid to the public, who cannot necessarily be held accountable for the decisions its leaders have made. I am personally not sure whether this accusation is entirely justified.

I agree with Laura and Kyle. I truly do believe that if North Korea really wants aid from other countries such as South Korea and U.S., North Korea must try and tighten their relations with South Korea and North Korea. Additionally, according to the article, North Korea has been dependent on food aid since the 1990s. Perhaps North Korean officials should have created a jobs that ensure they can feed the public.
