Israel: U.N. Asked to Prevent Activists From Sailing to Gaza Next Month

Israel asked the United Nations on Friday to help prevent activists from sailing to Gaza on the anniversary of the Israeli raid on a Turkish ship that tried to breach the blockade of the territory last May. The Free Gaza Movement, a pro-Palestinian activist group that sponsored the flotilla last year, said 15 ships with international passengers would sail for Gaza next month. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, that the flotilla “was being organized by Islamic extremist elements, among others, with the goal of creating a provocation and bringing about a flare-up,” Mr. Netanyahu’s office said. When Israel stopped the flotilla last year, Israeli marines killed nine Turkish activists in fighting aboard the lead ship

  1. I picked this article because I remember the attacks that happened last year. A girl in my Econ 221 class lost a family member in the Turkish attacks. When I came across this article I thought it would be a good idea to honor her family member by bringing attention to this event.

  2. Attacks such as these reveal very little hope for peace between Palestine and Israel. As disheartening as the situation is, there need to be at least "baby steps" to move toward a more pacifistic future. When one group is attacking the people and supporters of the other one continuously for over 60 years and vice versa, tensions stay extremely high and peace (or as close to "peace" as the world can get) is no where in sight.
I believe foreign nations, especially the work of the UN, should stay involved in this situation between Palestine and Israel. And these nations should also stay involved as the "middlemen" and "counselors" to ensure the promotion of progress.
