Protests In Syria

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/27/world/middleeast/27syria.html?_r=1&ref=middleeast

It looks like the situation in Syria is going to heat up. Some of the points that seemed interesting to me were the amount of violence that is being used against Syrian citizens from their Government. Armed forces have opened fire on protesters and have even brought in tanks and conducted house to house raids in search for protesters. It is also interesting that the international community is Considering sanctions (and we all know how well those work) against the Syrian government. I wonder if the international community will take aggressive action or not? What do you guys think?

  1. I don't think that there will be a lot of international action on these sanctions, especially on US's part because there really is no threat or benefit to helping out. I think that we should help out to avoid for a huge massacre, but without outcry for help, it won't be brought to government officals' attentions.

  2. A lot of international help or action is difficult to allocate in all these countries because they are experiencing similar issues during the same time. Therefore, it would be difficult to focus on one country alone. I also think that in situations like this, there needs to be some sort of an incentive for anyone that decides to help the counties.

  3. I think the syrian government has been successful at not getting the media and journalists to get in their way. They have closed borders and been violently attacking protesters. It has become a genocide and things continue to get worse. I think we need to step in and try and stop this violence because something needs to be done before it gets out of hand. Peoples rights, as humans, have been violated and all countries should do something about this matter.

  4. I don't think that they're going to take aggressive action. I agree with you that often times these sanctions don't really work. Look at North Korea the U.S. keeps handing down sanctions but it really doesn't stop the North Koreans from continuing with things like their nuclear program. Unfortunately I think it's going to take more than protester crackdowns to get the international community to respond.
