Former President Jimmy Carter visited Cuba and met with Raul Castro. In the meeting, he called for an end to the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba and for the travel ban to be lifted as it is only counterproductive. The purpose of the trip was to improve relations between the USA and Cuba, but Carter is the only President, past or present, to have visited the country since the Revolution in 1959.

This is very interesting. We do not hear much about Cuba these days. I think that it is interesting that so much of this revolves around the imprisonment of one American. I would like to hope that if one day someone I knew or even myself was jailed in a foreign country that the government went to go these lengths then. Nice find.

I agree! It seems really sad that this is what it takes for the US restore relations with Cuba. I think that it's terrible what the embargo has done to the country, with its 50's automobiles and impovirished society. I also think its good that someone is thinking that maybe it is the time to lift the ban already!!

As mentioned above, news concerning Cuba hasn't surfaced. Given the sensitive relationship the US has with Cuba, I would've assumed the US to have a close watch on Cuba and put much effort in solving issues with Cuba at a faster rate. Also, having a former president still make an impact on the nation and the world is very respectful. Makes me wonder what President Obama is preoccupied with.

ReplyDeleteYes, Cuba has not been in the news very much lately and it is primarily because of the distant relationship of the Us with cuba. Cuba is obviously the country thats getting the worse off deal in this ban and for Carter to take some sorts of actions and being the only president to even go to Cuba in the last 50 years is a nice step.

I totally agree, the US should restore its relationship with Cuba because that trade embargo is preventing Cuba from expanding economically. It's time for the US to start making the right decision because, one day, the situation may be reversed.

It is hard to say that we should restore a relationship with Cuba. I say this because Castro is still in power, and I am not sure that with all the other crisis that we are involved in that we should be involved with him. Involving ourselves with Cuba just opens us up for further conflict. While in an ideal world we would have a good relationship with Cuba I do not for see this occurring anytime soon.

I recently read an article about how his brother Raul is officially in charge. Fidel stated he effectively withdrew his rule over a year ago since his sickness has weakened him to such a degree. So many years have passed. The trade embargo was first implemented in order to show America's stance on communist regimes. Rather than help itself, the USA created a greater rival during the Cold War by blocking off trade and communication. In the 21st century, this is an absurd restriction.
