Recent protests in Sanaa are only further weakening the already poverty-stricken nation of Yemen. Due to such hostile conditions, the U.N. was forced to intervene. In the meeting, the majority of countries followed the lead of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the organization attempting to ease tensions between the government of Ali Abdullah Saleh and the protesters. Specifically, Germany, France, and the U.S. all supported the efforts of the GCC, while the China and Russia were said to be the main source of disagreement at the meeting.
One example of such extreme protest happened on Tuesday where six locals armed with machine guns opened fire on the soldiers. Overall, five people died on Tuesday, and four protesters were injured.
At the end of the article, the emphasis is drawn to the deaths of the children. The author emphasizes that no child should ever be found so close to contact with live ammunition, as many children in Yemen have experienced over the last two months. Overall, 41 children have died, 80 injured, and 800 exposed to tear gas.
Hopefully the United Nations will soon come to an agreement, for such atrocities are unacceptable.

The G.C.C. has offed an exit plan which "calls for the president to hand over power immediately and step down in 30 days, and sets up new presidential elections 60 days later...It also calls for an immediate end to protests." Still however some of the protesters do not trust agreement because of their distrust for the president. There is obviously a lot disagreement within the opposition groups and the chaos does not seem to be residing. Still I don't think that UN can settle things because every grop distrust another.

The United Nations involvement will surely assist in easing the turmoil in Yemen, but it will be unlikely that it will be able to get things into total control and prevent the deaths of innocent people/children. In times of war/revolt, deaths are likely and that is an unfortunate cause of uprisings.
ReplyDeleteThe best alternative available to parents or adults in order to take safeguard for their children, although drastic is to seek refuge in neighboring counties, or in other Yemen cities where violence is not so severe.
The Gulf Cooperation Council should take a more affirmative action in assisting in the Yemen endeavor, and steer away from relying heavily on the United Nations security due to the disagreements its members may have.
