Iranian conflict with Olympic symbol

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-12604512

Iran is calling the olympic symbol, created for the 2012 olympic games in London, racist due to the spelling of the logo looking like the word "Zion". While this is not a major article in the world of international relations, it will be interesting to see how this will play out. While Iran is not a big nation of interest for the olympics, it is still a global friendly event which everyone should be invited to participate in. If the OC does change the logo will it be setting a precedent for complaints in the future? Should the logo be changed or is this asking too much?

  1. Don't you think it is? I think its asking too much. That symbol has been the same since 1912. That is almost 100 years without one suggestion of change or idea of doing so. Also, like you said, if they do change the symbol because of then every other nation is going to find something wrong with it, and then suggest a change.

  2. I saw that story on Colbert. I think the logo is awful and should be changed just for being painful to look at. But to answer your question directly, I don't thing the logo will be changed because it would probably require to much effort and cost too much. Also, it could open the door for others to point at corporate and international logos and complain about all sorts of subliminal messages.

  3. I dont think that they should change the logo. the olympics have been around since 1912 and people know what the purpose of the olympics is.I just dont understand why the iranians would take it so personal.

  4. I also do not think it should be changed. They might be offended for a good reason but if they make the change then other countries might start to view different symbols and signs and request changes upon their request. Besides its not like the symbol was created to purposely offend a country.

  5. As everyone else said, I agree that it does not need to be changed. I was curious as to whether or not anything came of the issue and found that people have been offended/horrified by the logo since the summer of 2007. If it hasn't changed since then, I doubt it ever will. If I would have just glanced at the symbol I never would have even thought about the word "zion" especially since it was created for the "2012" olympics. Very interesting.
