Syria Stuggles

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704396904576226293686597156.html?mod=ITP_pageone_3

So I read this article and it mainly talks about how in Syria protesters are marching for freedom and justice. In some places the protesters called for the fall of the regime. At the same time of the protest the Syrian leadership id facing a major crisis on how to proceed with the unrest within the country.

Now another key point of this article is that Hilary Clinton announced that the U.S would not interfere, but they have condemned the excessive use of violence against protesters in Syria.

The main question arises that should the U.S not interfere with these disputes and what was the main difference from Libya??

I was not sure if this would be a good thing or bad that we would not be helping out in Syria.

Any thoughts?

  1. I don't think the U.S. has to interfere for the moment. The intervention in Libya was to prevent mass killings of civilians. It is my personal opinion that the U.S. is better off not doing anything in general. If people want democracy or another type of regime it is up to them. Our involvement reduces the legitimacy of the opposition that leads a revolutionary movement. In addition, democracy or any change may not be a change for the better in the long term.

  3. I also think the U.S should not interfere, I feel like moammar gadhafi of libya will only take our interference as disrespect and in return will do anything in his power to show the people of Libya that he is the one in charge. It will only aggravate the situation, just because a bunch of north African countries are having revolutions it doesn't mean everyone else should be also. Yes their situation might be just as bad but they need to remember they are protesting alone, not with americas help. Egypt didnt have Americas help in anything.

  4. I also don't think the U.S. should interfere. I'm not sure Gadhafi's ego would take it very well. He will make it clear that he has the power and what he says goes. I'm also not sure if the U.S. really knows what would be best for Syria in the long run. I also don't think interfering will benefit America in any way.
